Most people are afraid of the unpredictability of lightning. But only those who stray to appreciate its worth can truly understand its magnificence.
"But who is more ignorant? The man who cannot define lightning, or the man who does not respect its awesome power?

This is what my mom asked me when I told her about my idea to apply for a job at WWF. I just love her to death, but I hate it when she only thinks of money.
Since I graduated last April 3, I’m currently unemployed and I’ve been thinking of what to do with my life. I’ve thought about graduate school, but then I thought, there will always be plenty of time for that. I’m more worried about the impending immigration thing. We still haven’t got a date yet, so that’s a big gray area in my life. So when a friend of mine told me that I could get out of the family immigration thing is if I qualify as independent, meaning I have my own place and I have my own source of income. Which means, I HAVE TO GET A JOB.
So I started to get back to my Biology roots and find a job suitable for my skills with my course as a bonus. The first thing that popped into mind was taking some kind of environmental related job. I’ve always thought of myself as an environmentalist, just not in some hardcore kind of way. Just my little share of the usual things like conserving energy and water, and stuff. After the recent Earth hour, and a few commercials from NatGeo, I decided to search out the organization. I found out there was a branch here in the Philippines in Quezon City.
I haven’t applied yet, but I decided to tell my mom first and that was what she told me.
I accept that were not a rich family and we do have recurring money problems, especially since me and my brothers study in private schools. That was a major factor why I decided not to study medicine. But I think there are better reasons to take on a job other than money.
Just last year, during my 4th year, 1st semester in college, our guidance counselor came to our class and had us take some kind of Work Values Determination test. I can’t remember the exact name of the test, but it consisted of questions pertaining to what I would like in my work. Points were distributed into categories and ranked highest to lowest. The top 3 were considered to be the desired work values. I had a top 1 and 3-way-ties in 2nd and 3rd.
My top value was SECURITY. 2nd were WAY OF LIFE, ALTRUISM, INDEPENDENCE. 3rd were INTELLECTUAL STIMULATION, RECOGNITION, ACHIEVEMENT.
What was dead last? Yep. MONETARY COMPENSATION.
Money was never an issue with me. I just wanted a job that meant something. Something bigger. That was why I wanted to go to medicine. When that became a dream, I wanted to take on Literature as a Master’s Degree (or Environmental Science) and be a professor. Even now, I still think of teaching, but maybe that would be in some later date.
I believe in what Confucius said, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Although I admit, money is important, it is NOT a priority. I want my life to mean something, to be remembered as someone who tried to make a change in this world. Most of all, I want to LOVE what I’m doing. I want to wake up in the morning, itching to go to work and coming home with a huge smile on my face. That is what success is for me.
I may be a little bit idealistic now. Slowly, but surely, taking small steps at a time, I’m going to reach that idea of mine.
Just wait and see. WWF, here I come. ;)
